The Ophthalmology Department, Dunedin School of Medicine runs an intensive interactive 2 week residential course in Dunedin in November each year. The course is for New Zealand and Australian medical graduates in their second year of the RANZCO training programme to prepare for the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologist (FRANZCO).

 

This year the two week clinical course will run from Monday 31 October to Friday 11th November 2016 in Dunedin New Zealand for candidates sitting the RANZCO Advanced Clinical Examination in 2017. Sub-specialty topics will be addressed. For each topic there will be clinically oriented interactive modules, seminars and case presentations. In addition there will be 4 mock OSCE’s and 4 mock written examinations (Candidates will be split into two groups with one group doing an OSCE while the other group doing the mock written examination). Candidates will work in pairs, alternating between being the examiner and observer during OSCE’s. The course is limited and candidates must have passed the RACE Pathology exam to be eligible.

 

Application Process and Entry Requirements

Applications open on 1 April 2016. As there are limited places on this course candidates and will be selected on the following criteria*:

  • The candidate has passed the Pathology Exam
  • The candidate will be sitting the RANZCO Advanced Clinical Examination in 2017
  • The candidate has not attended the Course previously
  • The candidate has provided a signed leave form from their training provider/institute

 

 

Once above criteria has been met, the candidate may register online (online registration will NOT be accepted without prior receipt of leave form). The candidate is required to pay the course fee of NZ$3,500.00 by 20th July 2016 to confirm their place on the course.

 

*Preference will always be given to trainees on the RANZCO Vocational Training Programme and to those who have not already participated in the Course. People who do not meet the criteria will be placed on a waiting list and advised in August.

Venue

Dunedin Ophthalmology Course

The Dunedin Ophthalmology Course is held at the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand.  The lectures will be held in Room G30, The Hunter Centre Corner of Frederick and Great King Streets.  The main entrance is on Great King Street.  The OSCE's will be held in the Eye Department, Level 2, Dunedin Hospital (directly across the road from The Hunter Centre).  There is a cafe situated in the Hunter Centre serving coffee and food (closed on Saturday).

 

General Information

Getting to Dunedin City

The Dunedin International Airport is situated 30 minutes drive from the city and the cheapest option is to book a shuttle online with group bookings considerably cheaper than single bookings. (Taxi fare one way from the airport is currently in the region of NZ$90.00   www.supershuttle.co.nz )

 

Location

All candidates are to report to Room G30 in the Hunter Centre (entry is on Great King Street) at 8am on Monday 31 October 2016.  Please refer to the venue map on this website.  The building is situated opposite the Dental School Main Entrance.

All OSCE’s will be held at the Dunedin Hospital located at 201 Great King Street. All lectures will be held at The Hunter Centre (across the road from the hospital).

 

Equipment (OSCEs)

There will be sufficient indirect ophthalmoscopes provided for the relevant OSCE stations, however you are encouraged to bring your own if you prefer to be practicing with the equipment you will be using in the actual OSCE. Clipboards and question/answer sheets will be provided for the OSCE’s. (A4 ruled 100 leaf writing pad provided in registration pack).

 

Wireless Internet

Free Wireless Internet access will be provided in the lecture room. A number of power outlets will be set up within the room for charging of devices.  Please note there will be no wireless access at the Dunedin Hospital.

 

Readings

A limited amount of readings has been supplied by lecturers prior to the course and these will be provided on the first day of the course and any updates circulated during the course. Candidates will be given access to a Dropbox folder where lecturers notes will be placed throughout the course (subject to lecturer permission).

 

Dress

All Candidates should wear professional attire on the first day of the course and for days that they will attend an OSCE, however casual wear will be permitted on their non-OSCE days (OSCE Groups will be confirmed on the first day of the course - so we suggest that you wear your professional attire on day one!). Social events will be smart casual. 

 

Meals

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided at morning and afternoon tea times and a basic packed lunch will be provided for candidates on the days they are attending the OSCE’s. Lunches will be named and will include any special diets previously advised.  Please note that candidates not attending the OSCE’s will need to make their own lunch arrangements and there are a number of cafes in close proximity to the course venue.  There is a cafe within the Hunter Centre which serves coffee and food (not open on Saturday).

 

Coffee

We can recommend DUNEDIN ROASTERY CAFE which is situated across the road from the venue. Alternatively THE FIX CAFE on Frederick Street (towards the city) also The Dispensary Cafe on the Ground Floor of the Hospital is very popular, but there may be a wait.

 

Social Events

The course includes two social events which are both included in the course fee.  More information will be provided once the event dates are confirmed.

 

Health 

DUNEDIN URGENT DOCTORS are situated at 95 Hanover Street.  Medical Emergencies dial 111.

Anyone suffering from an infectious disease eg Adeno-viral conjunctivitis, must not attend the course and fees will be fully refunded if you find yourself in this position.

The course fee of NZ$3,500.00 which must be paid by 20 July 2016 to confirm your place. Candidates will be able to pay by credit card via the Currinda online registration system, alternatively payment can be made by direct credit or by cheque (in NZ dollars). Refunds

Cancellations received prior to 1 October 2016 will be refunded less an administration fee of NZ$300.00. Cancellations made from 1 October - 30 October 2016 will be refunded less an administration fee of NZ$800.00. No refunds will be made from 31 October 2016. Refunds cannot be made due to travel delay or disruption.

 

Insurance

Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that all delegates take out personal travel and medical insurance prior to attending the event. The policy should include loss of fees through cancellation of your participation or through cancellation of the event itself, loss of airfares for any reason, medical expenses, loss or damage to personal property, additional expenses and repatriation should travel arrangements have to be altered. The Course Organisers will not take any responsibility for any delegate failing to insure.  If for any reasons beyond the control of the Course Organisers, the course is cancelled, registration fees will be refunded after deduction of expenses.
